How to Choose, Care for, and Wear a Wig

There is a possibility that you will lose some or all your hair after receiving certain cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy. It is usually visible after three weeks and then becomes more noticeable within a month. Some women appreciate the privacy and sense of normalcy that a wig offers, while others are happy to have a new look. Before you start treatment, it’s a good idea to look around for wigs. This will allow you to take the time and energy necessary to research all options. This will allow you to take your time getting used to the wig and to test it out. You could wear it for practice, while others could be worn with your natural hair.

You can shop online, visit a wig shop or go in person with a specialist to help you find the right wig for you. You can always ask your hairdresser, your support group, or your cancer care team for help in finding the right wig. Before you make a purchase, check out the exchange and return policies at any place you shop.

Talk to your insurance company. You may be eligible for some or all of your insurance company’s coverage for a wig, if your doctor prescribes a “cranial prosthesis” or “hair prosthesis” to you. If you are still concerned about cost, an organization like the American Cancer Society might offer a free wig.

Here’s how to go about getting a wig once you have decided to do so.

Take a measurement of your head

A cloth measuring tape is best. You can either wet your hair or let it dry naturally. Take three inches of measurement so that you can fit for a wig.

  1. Measure from the top one ear to your other ear.
  2. Measure the circumference of your head from the hairline to your back with the measuring tape.
  3. Measure from the top of the hairline to the back part of the neck.

Get your hair ready

Do you want a wig that matches your current hairstyle? Take a picture and take a snippet of hair from the top-front part of your head.

Do you have long hair? You might consider cutting your hair. You might be less noticeable if you change to a wig.

To prevent your hair from falling out, you can wear a mesh cap to cover your head while you sleep. You can also shave your head with an electric razor.

Select a wig

Select a style first. A full wig covers your head. Topper: This topper adds volume and length to thinning hair. You can wear a hat, or head scarf with the halo to cover your hair on the sides.

Next, choose the material. You can choose from natural hair or artificial hair (synthetic), or a combination of both. Consider a color. Ideal is a shade that is lighter than your natural hair.

An adjustable wig is the best. You’ll find it more comfortable to fit your head.

Wear it well

Put on your wig

  • The label should be in the back.
  • Place the wig in the middle of your forehead by tilting your head forward. Slide it on from the front to the back.

The top of the wig’s hat should be about 1 inch above your natural hairline. Your ears should be in front of the ear tabs. Are your wigs not fitting properly? Adjust the back tabs. If this doesn’t work, try a different size.

Here are some tips to make your new look look natural once you have it on.

  • Do not put too much hair up.
  • Instead of putting every hair in its place, try to loosen it up.
  • For a more natural look, ask a hairdresser for haircuts and to thin the wig.
  • A lace front and monofilament top are also good options.

You will need to care for your wig no matter what type it is. Synthetic hair wigs are cheaper and require less maintenance. Natural hair wigs are more durable and easier to style.

Refer to the instructions provided with your wig about how to clean it. If you wear your wig daily, shampoo it and condition it once every 10-14 days. Otherwise, wash it after 8-10 uses. If you use a lot of hair sprays or styling products, it will need to be washed more frequently. It should be dried and stored on a stand.During treatment, give your scalp some TLC. Wearing a mesh or nylon wig cap underneath your wig is a good idea. It will absorb sweat and keep your scalp from becoming irritated. You can apply broad-spectrum sunscreen that has at least 30 SPF to your top when you aren’t wearing your wig. Protect your scalp with a scarf or hat on cold days.

After you have finished your treatment, your hair will start growing back. This could take several months and your hair may be different in texture, color, or thickness. These kinds of changes are not permanent. It’s possible that your hair will look the same as before treatment.
