How Wigs by Vanity Keep Combing Back for More
Wigs By Vanity is a dragging company that you might have seen. The brand was the first to be created by drag queens for drag queens. It is now one of the most sought-after and popular retailers in drag.
Vanity Faire, AKA Benjamin Moor, is the face behind this successful wig company. RuPaul’s Drag Race royalty Courtney Act, AKA Shane Janek, also owns the wig company. They have combined forces to create one of the largest wig companies globally, with their products being worn by RuPaul and Katya Zamolodchikova and Alaska 5000, among others.
The Beginning of Something Fabulous
Vanity began her career as a hairdresser. She loved the idea that she could create beautiful hair for people. “I started hairdressing at sixteen. I have been doing it for many years. When I realized that I didn’t want to have hair done, I started to wear wigs. I also had friends who were drag queens who wanted wigs. Vanity explained that I quickly became the person who could order wigs and constantly made up new styles. “But I had natural talent and insight that was good for what I was doing. I gained a lot of experience and gained trust.”
“It was in the mid-noughties and Courtney and myself wanted fabulous wigs. We realized that we were well-suited for each other’s talents and skills, so we worked together to balance each other out,” stated Vanity. “We had always hoped to make beautiful and stunning wigs for drag queens.”
Wigs by Vanity was the first company to make synthetic wigs for drag queens by drag princesses. Benjamin, a Sydney-based hairdresser, has been around since childhood. “We started in the early days of online shopping. eBay was beginning. It was very experimental and new. Vanity said that because we were the only ones doing this, it was sufficient for us to learn and make money.
Staying A- Head in the Competition
Vanity tries to keep up with the rest of her competitors when it comes to staying ahead. “I try to live in my bubble, do things that are authentic for me and make the best wigs I can. Our uniqueness is in the fact that I create my own wigs. I am very close to our supplier. It’s not easy work but it’s a unique product that I designed from the beginning,” stated Vanity.
The brand’s advertising strategy relies heavily on social media. Vanity said that Instagram is the only way he advertises. After removing Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms, Instagram became the main place for queens to find inspiration and the latest styles. Instagram gives you a glimpse into Vanity’s life and studio. She often offers ‘Fabulous Fridays discount codes’ and limited-edition pieces.
What is the process of creating a wig?
The process of creating a beautiful wig for Vanity is tedious. “I am a creative person, so many things are going on inside my head. Sometimes, I will focus on colour and not style. At the moment, I have four to five styles in production. I am trying to figure out what my next generation of wigs will look like. The wigs come from China and can take over a year before they reach Vanity. Vanity is always working on new products. Vanity uses her messy spreadsheet to create new products. It is filled with colour names and styles, as well as ideas. Many of the names are inspired by pop culture icons, including ‘Blush and Bashful,’ ‘Mother of Dragons,’ and’ Mattel Blonde. Wigs by Vanity is a well-known name among drag queens. However, Courtney Act stepped in to season 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race and was ranked as the Top Three in her season. After dancing her way to the top on Dancing with the Stars, she came in 2nd and won Celebrity Big Brother UK – all Wigs By Vanity masterpieces. Wigs By Vanity has been a staple on the scalps of thousands of people, from Eurovision stars to supermodels.
What’s next for Wigs by Vanity, you ask?
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing. As with any business venture, there have been ups and downs that make the brand stronger. “We went through a period, very recently, that saw us experience incredible growth since our inception. We were growing bigger and better, and then we stopped for a while, which affected me emotionally,” explained Vanity. “I thought it was over, but then I realized that society places pressures on us to be successful entrepreneurs, and I was placing this pressure on my own business. I was not listening to my needs and comfort, so I decided that “if this business doesn’t grow beyond this point, it will be fine.” “I’m happy. I have a full-time job and do something I love.” Vanity stated.
Wigs By Vanity hopes to keep a constant level of respect throughout the entire journey, despite the growing popularity of drag culture around the globe. Vanity stated, “I hope it’ll be the same as it is now, but bigger.” “Extend the model; I am happy with it as is and with its current scope.
Wigs by Vanity continues its dominance with its amazing collection of designs and stunning styling. Wigs by Vanity is poised to grow in size, hire more people, and make more beautiful wigs.
